Apologies for more effin and jeffin in the title, but sometimes you just have to go with your gut.

According to the Bradford Telegraph and Argus, Rory Patterson has signed for Bradford Park Avenue.

My initial feeling is one of bitter disappointment. Rory was an exceptional player, and one that would improve every non league team. The lad should be playing full time, and for his sake I hope this is a stepping stone to bigger and better things.

Secondly, he’s got his family to think about, and if BPA are offering more money, which you’d have to assume they are, then he’s every right to take it. This isn’t, as was pointed out on the unofficial forum, the same as a Premiership player moving clubs for the difference between £100k and £120k. The difference between what he’ll earn at BPA and what he earned at FC United can make a tangible difference in his quality of life.

Rory (and like all the greats, Eric, Diego, Pelé, one name will suffice) provided some great and iconic moments, even from the very minute he took to the pitch without a shirt number against Stayleybridge Celtic. His goal from the half way line against Silsden will live long in my memory, and rightly gained him his five minutes. And even when he wasn’t scoring goals, you couldn’t keep your eyes off him, as he turned out in nets in the dramatic win against Newcastle Town.

There’s no point pretending he wont be a big loss, he will. We’ve lost someone who can not only score forty a season, but create many more too. But FC United are more than Rory Patterson. We’ve still (I hope) got players of the quality of Chris Baguley and Jerome Wright, and we’ll do fine next season with or without Rory. Besides, who knows what Margy’s got up his sleeves?

So farewell Rory. No doubt we’ll be seeing you next year, and no offence, I hope you play shit for those two games. Or maybe injure yourself the day before the game. And there’s always a very good chance you’ll be suspended for it anyway.

Perfectly and delicately put, Chris.

Totally agree that Rory will be a loss, but we’ll move on and hopefully, Rory will be totally distracted by his offspring, the lead spent from his pencil and he will be sleep deprived, nodding off mid-match and being more offside than usual.

Seriously, though. Rory: I wish you luck (but not too much). I hope you’re injured, though not painfully and still paid, for most of the season and that you act graciously when/if you score against us.

BPA: Treat Rory well, don’t take the piss, bench him at every opportunity and transfer list him within 3 games. We’ll take him back to his spiritual him.
