It’s time to inflate your balloons, get out your tinfoil and FA Cup shaped bits of cardboard, and don your red, white and black curly wig, for today is the day that the FA Cup draw is made.
I see last season’s FA Cup campaign very much as a ‘what could have been’ for FC United of Manchester. Given the final was eventually contested by two (effectively) non league teams, I’m sure Margy will rue his bad luck in the First Qualifying Round draw. Getting knocked out at Highbury, after losing 2-1 to a team in those famous red shirts with white sleeves *cough*Fleetwood Town*cough* was hard to take. There’s no doubt in my mind that had we overcome the bottle chuckers, we’d have won the whole thing, and celebrated our cup final win in May with Wembley’s £8.50 Fish and Chip meal ‘deal’ and an away tie at Gornik Zabrze in the Cup Winners’ Cup.
This season, due to our ridiculously lofty league position (just THREE divisions between us and Leeds ‘the only team to sing ‘Champions of Europe’ without ever having been Champions of Europe’ United), we don’t have to play in as many of the qualifying rounds as last year. This means, in reality, we get knocked out of the FA Cup having played one game fewer. This is the price of progress, people.
But not to worry, the draw for the FA Trophy is also today, giving us ample opportunity to proclaim it as ‘the FA’s premier competition’ when we get knocked out of the other one.
Full coverage to follow here after my breakfast, a quick nap, and the actual draw.
