There’s a superb thread on the forum with countless photographs from the past three seasons. The one that stands out most, for me, is this one from the mini-Derby at Stalybridge.
That game remains my absolute favourite day out with FC. A cracking game complete with sending-off and late winner, a smart little ground, a decent pub, and the right result. The only drawback being I had to work that night, but not even that mattered too much, as I turned up late, still shit-faced, and with a huge shit-eating grin plastered all over my face.
Anyway, the thread is here: Old But Gold You’ll have to register, if you haven’t already, but it’s well worth it.
And as an extra little treat, here’s the message that Maine Road FC were posting around the web in the build up to the game in an attempt to drum up an extra-thousand or so stripey jumper wearing, aeroplane gesturing nobheads:
“51 years is a long time to be kicking a bag of wind around the lower non leagues of North West England. Hundreds of young men have played for ‘The Road’ and enjoyed their time there, some have stayed and kept up the good fight, become part of the set up and put many unpaid hours into just keeping the clubs head above water, and that’s bloody hard work on gates of less than 100. Maine Road will still be around in another 51 years, some other things come and go.
That brings me to FC Utd of Bury. Never played a home game in Manchester, at least the proper rags used to play in Newton Heath!. The Chelsea of the non league, money coming out of every orifice, packing the supporters in, going to win the league, but not an ounce of class about them. What can you expect from the breakaway club, formed by the fans who objected to Glazer’s plans to turn the club into his own personal cash cow, as opposed to it being the cash cow for other multi millionaires and city institutions. Never the brightest of folk these rags.
On the 4th November the two faces of non league football come face to face. Maine Road, a club formed by loyal Blues and still run by loyal Blues and FC formed by disgruntled rags and supported in their thousands by more nasty rags. FC expect to bring 3000+ to the game, and having read 1 or 2 of their forums they intend to turn the day into a mini Derby, take the piss and win 5-0.
The scoreline is out of our control but believe me the Maine Road lads will be well up for it, and as we know if you get amongst the rags you never know, (3-1, 4-1, 3-1). On the terraces it is another matter, we need your support. The club have set aside room for a good 2000 Maine Road (Blues) supporters to show that we are capable of getting behind fellow Blues in what could be their finest hour. They could have just given the whole ground over to FC and count the money, but it is more important to the club to have as many Blues there as possible. They asked for the game on a day when City were away, and have pushed the game as much as possible, News 24, GMR and the MEN, thousands of leaflets, contacting as many City Supporters Clubs as possible. With all this effort and the help of Bluewatch, Bluemoon, King of the Kippax and many others we have reached as many Blues as possible.
Its only £7 (£3 concessions), the club need your support, but more importantly it promises to be a cracking game. The game is at Stalybridge Celtic (Bower Fold) KO 3.00pm.
