I just nearly choked on my Mega Vimto chew bar on hearing the news that The Sun had printed something about BobBlackburn Park Avenue’s now infamous preseason tour. Sure enough, having shop-lifted myself a copy, Paul Jiggins writes about it in his ‘Jigsaw’ column on page 7 of the Super Super Super Super Goals pullout.
If you thought Manchester city’s signing of Robinho was far-fetched, just hear Bradford Park Avenue’s own coverage of their pre-season tour of Spain.
The Yorkshire minnows claimed on their website new signing Rory Patterson had hit a hat-trick in one of a string of games against “tough opposition”.
However it turns out Patterson, a recent signing from FC United, did not even go on the tour. And his new club did not face sides from La Liga 3, but the local Sunday Liga.
Club spokesman Kevin Hainsworth said “Rory was actually on holiday in Majorca at the time. It was a wind-up to see how people would take it.”
But Dave Stordy, of Park Avenue Supporters’ Club, stormed: “The fans should not be led up the garden path.”
Don’t miss next week’s news on the BPA website: Park Avenue 3 Real Madrid 0.
And while this story is over two months old now, I’ve certainly not grown tired of it. Has anyone outside of Bradford?
