It’ll Be Off

Love can build a bridge

“Love,” sang American country music mother-daughter duo, The Judds, “Can build a bridge. Between your heart and mine, love can build a bridge. Don’t you think it’s time?”

Beautiful words, and words which I would take a lot more seriously if they also hadn’t sung “I’m like a John Deere Tractor, in a half acre field, tryin’ to plow a furrow, where the soil is made of steel.” But let’s put that to one side for a minute, and embrace the beautiful spirit of altruism. The life-affirming, happy-clappy, hippy, one love bullshit that this world is so crying out for.

The following has been posted on the official Altrincham FC website:

Brian Flynn, Acting Chairperson of STAR, writes:Altrincham F.C. Supporters’ Group Meeting,Thursday September 18th:

I have recently received an e-mail from F.C. United of Manchester who are keen to try to improve the deteriorating relationship between the fans of the two clubs, particularly following the pre-season fixture between the two teams in July. They have requested an opportunity to attend one of our Supporters’ Meetings to give a brief outline of their club and their constitution and answer any questions that Altrincham supporters may have. Having consulted members of Altrincham F.C.’s Board, we have agreed to this request and I wanted to give Altrincham fans advance notice that this will be one of the agenda items at Thursday’s meeting.

Presumably at this meeting, the Alty fans will turn up, hear what our firebrand preachers have to say, and will forever be converted to our way of thinking. They’ll then apologise for their previous mard-arse misdeeds, take an FC fan by the hand, place a garland of flowers around their neck, and skip gayly together down to Moss Lane.

For the cynic in me suggests that the only reason we’d be looking to build bridges with Altrincham would be if we were planning to spend a lot more time in each others’ company. And given we had permission to use their Moss Lane ground for cup games this season (before the FA put the kibosh on it) and that we’re on the spy for a new ground for next season, I’m going to put two and two together here, and not give a fuck what the outcome is.

No idea what your three stooges were doing there. No need to build bridges as we couldn’t really give a flying f**k about you and I am sure the feeling is mutual.

So Nigel did you have the bottle to tell the “stooges” this or are you one of the internet shithouses that has stirred up the trouble in the first place?
